Bangalore experienced significant rainfall yesterday, and the forecast indicates that the city will continue to see wet weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for today, followed by a yellow alert for tomorrow, suggesting that Bangalore residents should prepare for more rain in the coming days. This follows a day of heavy downpour that caused disruptions across the city.
The recent rainfall is attributed to the shift in monsoons. According to Dr N Puviarasan from IMD Bengaluru, the southwest monsoon has withdrawn, and the northeast monsoon has commenced. This transition, coupled with a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, is bringing widespread rainfall to southern peninsular India, including Bangalore. The low-pressure system is expected to intensify, further influencing the weather in the region and ensuring continued rainfall in Bangalore until at least October 21.
Yesterday’s heavy rains led to significant waterlogging and traffic congestion across Bangalore. Many roads were inundated, and areas like Mahadevapura, particularly Talakaveri Layout, faced severe flooding. Even zones that received moderate rainfall, such as the East and South zones, experienced considerable waterlogging, highlighting the city’s vulnerability to even moderate downpours. The western parts of the city near Malleswaram also reported significant flooding.
In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall and the orange alert for today, the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner declared a holiday for schools today. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of students given the anticipated intensified rainfall. While schools remain closed today and tomorrow (due to a pre-existing holiday), colleges will remain open, though with advisories to ensure student safety during commutes and on campus. IT, BT, and other private companies have also been advised to allow work from home today to minimize通勤 and ensure employee safety amidst potential traffic disruptions and flooding.
Despite the challenges brought by the rain, there was an unusual temperature pattern observed yesterday. Daytime temperatures in Bangalore dropped significantly, creating a surprisingly cool day, while nighttime temperatures slightly increased. This unusual dip in daytime temperature is a direct consequence of the continuous rainfall and cloud cover over the city.
Yesterday’s downpour transformed roads into streams, leading to severe traffic jams and travel delays throughout Bangalore. Several areas experienced knee-deep water, causing flooding in homes and widespread disruption. Key areas like Kendriya Vihar and Manyata Tech Park were heavily affected, with submerged roads and stranded vehicles. The heavy rain and its aftermath made it a difficult day for Bangalore residents, and with more rain expected today and tomorrow, continued vigilance and preparedness are advised.
