Is There Any Cyclone in Karnataka Today?

Karnataka is currently experiencing heavy rainfall due to the remnants of Cyclone Fengal, which has weakened into a low-pressure area. While not a cyclone today, Fengal’s impact continues to bring widespread rain across the state.

Coastal Karnataka and parts of South Interior Karnataka are expected to receive more rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for Bengaluru, Hassan, Mandya, and Ramanagara, indicating heavy rainfall (6-11 cm). Orange alerts, signifying very heavy rainfall (up to 20 cm), are in place for Udupi, Chikmagalur, and Chikkaballapura. The IMD attributes this widespread downpour to Fengal’s weakening trajectory.

The low-pressure system, formerly Cyclone Fengal, is currently over North Interior Tamil Nadu. However, it’s anticipated to re-emerge over the southeast and east-central Arabian Sea near the Kerala-Karnataka coastline around December 3. This could lead to further weather disturbances in the region.

On December 2, Kodagu district is forecast to experience isolated extremely heavy rain. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Chamarajanagar, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Mysuru. Hassan, Mandya, and Ramanagara are predicted to receive scattered heavy rains. Moderate rainfall is likely in Tumkur, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, and Kolar districts, with lighter showers in northern Karnataka.

Strong winds (35-55 kmph) are expected along the South Karnataka coast on December 2 and 3. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period. Schools and colleges in Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Chamarajanagar, and Mysuru districts are closed on December 2 as a precautionary measure due to the heavy rainfall.

On December 3, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, Kodagu, Ramanagara, and Chamarajanagar. Moderate rains are likely across much of the state, including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumkur, and other districts. Residents, particularly in areas under yellow and orange alerts, should remain vigilant. While Cyclone Fengal is no longer a threat, its lingering effects will continue to bring rainy and stormy conditions to Karnataka for the next few days. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and issue advisories.
