Georgia Flags at Half Mast: Honouring Jimmy Carter

Flags in Georgia and across the US are flying at half-mast to honour former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on 19 February 2023, aged 98. President Biden proclaimed a period of mourning and ordered flags lowered until sunset on 27 February 2023. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp echoed this order, ensuring flags across the state are lowered in accordance with the national proclamation. This allows Americans to pay their respects to a man dedicated to public service.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th US President (1977-1981), was also Georgia’s 76th Governor and a US Navy veteran. His post-presidency saw him tirelessly working through The Carter Center, founded with his wife, Rosalynn, in 1982. The Center champions human rights, democracy, and global health, earning him the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.

Lowering flags to half-mast is a traditional mark of respect and mourning. The US Flag Code outlines protocols for this practice. Lowering the flag symbolises national unity and collective grief, visually reminding us of the individual being honoured and their contributions. Georgians and all Americans are encouraged to reflect on President Carter’s legacy.
