President Donald J. Trump announced a new national security strategy focused on economic strength and a “whole-of-government” approach. The strategy, unveiled at the Reagan Building, prioritizes protecting American interests, rebuilding the nation, and restoring its global standing.
Trump’s national security strategy encompasses homeland defense, border security, trade policy, and economic strength, in addition to military power. The strategy acknowledges the interconnectedness of economic security and national security, asserting that economic vitality is crucial for American power and influence abroad.
The president stressed the importance of the $700 billion National Defense Authorization Act, highlighting the administration’s commitment to military readiness and providing necessary support to military personnel. He emphasized the need for “extraordinary strength” to achieve lasting peace.
Trump addressed specific threats posed by Iran, North Korea, Russia, and China. He also touted successes against ISIS, claiming the coalition had recaptured almost 100 percent of the territory once held by the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria. He called for integrating all aspects of national strength to maintain momentum in the fight against terrorism.
The strategy outlines four vital national interests: protecting the American people, homeland, and way of life; promoting economic prosperity; preserving peace through strength; and advancing American influence. Border security is identified as a critical component of national security, along with combating radical Islamic terrorism and preventing its spread.
The strategy advocates for a complete military modernization, reversing previous decisions to reduce the size of the armed forces. It calls for streamlining acquisitions, eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies, and significantly bolstering the military, which Trump said would have the added benefit of creating millions of jobs. The strategy also highlights the importance of space and cyberspace as new military domains.
Trump emphasized the importance of strong alliances based on cooperation and reciprocity. He stated that the U.S. would forge new partnerships with nations that share common goals and interests. The strategy promotes a vision of strong, sovereign, and independent nations that respect their citizens and neighbors, thrive in commerce and cooperation, and are rooted in their histories while striving towards their destinies.
