An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck Telangana’s Mulugu district on Wednesday morning, 4 December 2024, at approximately 7:27 am IST. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the quake’s depth as 40 kilometres, with its epicentre located in the Mulugu region. The tremors were felt across Telangana, including in Hyderabad, prompting residents to share their experiences on social media.
The NCS confirmed the earthquake details via a post on X (formerly Twitter): “EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana.”
People in Mulugu and neighbouring districts, including Hyderabad, reported feeling the tremors. The moderate intensity quake caused noticeable shaking, leading many to take to social media platforms to share videos and firsthand accounts of the event.
One Twitter user, @vbkarnati, shared their experience from an apartment in Hyderabad: “Actually i am in apartment in hyd. I am in the chair, my chair was, apartment was trembling, immediately i posted in twitter…”
Another social media user, known as ‘Telangana Weatherman’, highlighted the significance of the earthquake on X: “For the first time in last 20years, one of the strongest earthquake occured in Telangana with 5.3 magnitude earthquake at Mulugu as epicentre. Entire Telangana including Hyderabad too felt the tremors. Once again earthquake at Godavari river bed, but a pretty strong one.”
As of the latest reports, there have been no casualties or property damage reported. However, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the seismic activity in the region. Telangana is classified under Seismic Zone II, the lowest intensity zone in India’s four-zone seismic classification system (Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V). Zone V represents the highest level of seismic activity and is considered the most earthquake-prone.
