NFL Today: Matt Ryan In, Simms & Esiason Out

CBS’s “The NFL Today” is set for a shake-up this fall with former quarterback Matt Ryan joining the team and longtime analysts Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason departing. Ryan, who retired last week after a 15-year NFL career, joined CBS Sports as a game analyst last season and contributed to studio coverage during the playoffs and Super Bowl. He brings recent on-field experience and a deep understanding of the game to the pregame show.

Simms, a former New York Giants quarterback, spent almost two decades as CBS’s lead game analyst before moving to the studio. His insightful commentary and chemistry with fellow analysts made him a staple on “The NFL Today.”

Esiason, a former quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals, had the longest tenure on “The NFL Today,” spanning over two decades. He provided viewers with expert analysis and engaging discussions throughout his time on the show. Esiason confirmed on his New York radio show that the decision to leave was more on the network’s side, though he will continue his radio show simulcast on CBS Sports Network. Both Esiason and Simms’ contracts were not renewed after expiring following the Super Bowl.

Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP, boasts impressive career statistics, including over 60,000 passing yards. He led the Atlanta Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance in 2017 and earned four Pro Bowl selections. This new role on “The NFL Today” allows him to share his expertise and insights with a wider audience.

CBS decided not to renew the contracts of both Simms and Esiason after the Super Bowl, leading to their departure from the show. This significant shift in the “NFL Today” cast marks a new era for the iconic pregame show. Ryan expressed his excitement about joining the show and continuing the legacy built by his predecessors. He acknowledged growing up watching “The NFL Today” and aims to maintain the high standards set by Simms, Esiason, and other former analysts. His enthusiasm and experience promise to bring a fresh perspective to the program.
