Trump’s “America First” National Security Strategy Unveiled

President Trump announced a new national security strategy prioritising American interests and economic strength. The strategy, unveiled at the Reagan Building, emphasises a “whole-of-government” approach and a commitment to rebuilding America’s global standing.

Defense Secretary James Mattis praised the strategy as “clear and comprehensive,” emphasising the military’s role in ensuring American diplomats negotiate from a position of strength. The strategy aims to protect American interests, secure borders, bolster economic strength, and modernise the military.

Trump stressed the importance of putting “America First” in all decisions, rebuilding the nation’s confidence and international influence. The strategy encompasses various aspects of national security, including homeland defense, border control, trade policies, and economic power.

The $700 billion National Defense Authorization Act, signed by Trump, signifies the administration’s commitment to military strength as a deterrent to conflict and a foundation for lasting peace. The strategy aims to equip the military with necessary resources and support.

Trump addressed specific threats posed by nations like Iran, North Korea, Russia, and China. He highlighted successes against ISIS, noting the recapture of almost 100 percent of the territory once held by the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria. This success, according to Trump, requires integrating all aspects of national power.

The strategy outlines four vital national interests: protecting the American people, homeland, and way of life; promoting economic prosperity; preserving peace through strength; and advancing American influence globally. Securing borders is deemed crucial for national security, along with combating radical Islamic terrorism and preventing its spread within the United States. The strategy also calls for countering threats in new domains like cyberspace and social media.

For the first time, economic security is recognised as a cornerstone of national security. The strategy emphasises the link between economic vitality and American power and influence abroad. Trump stressed that trading prosperity for security ultimately leads to the loss of both.

The strategy advocates for military modernisation, reversing previous force reductions, and streamlining acquisitions to enhance military capabilities. It calls for eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies and boosting military strength, which in turn creates jobs.

The strategy recognises the importance of space and cyberspace as new military domains and emphasises strengthening alliances to address emerging threats. It acknowledges the amplified strength derived from allies who share common principles and responsibilities for mutual security.

Finally, the strategy aims to advance American influence by building wealth and power domestically. It promotes strong alliances based on cooperation and reciprocity, seeking new partnerships with nations that share common goals and interests. Trump affirmed America’s commitment to championing its values without apology, promoting a vision of strong, sovereign, and independent nations that respect their citizens and neighbours.
