Overwhelmed? Finding Strength in Tough Times

When life gets too much, the “I’m not feeling it today” meme resonates deeply. It’s a shared online sentiment, a virtual comfort in tough times. But what if this feeling becomes constant? How do we find strength when facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles?

The saying “God won’t give you more than you can handle” offers comfort, but it’s not a direct biblical quote. 1 Corinthians 10:13 assures us God provides a way out of temptation, but life’s burdens often extend beyond that. Sometimes, we undeniably face more than we feel capable of handling.

Even the Apostle Paul admitted this in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9: “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.” This validates feeling overwhelmed, showing even biblical figures struggled with heavy burdens.

Instead of trying to handle everything alone, we’re called to lean on a higher power. It’s about surrendering our struggles, acknowledging limitations, and relying on God’s strength. Believing we should handle everything independently sets us up for disappointment when we falter.

It’s easy to spiral negatively, asking “Why me?” and focusing on the unknown. Shifting focus to what we do know – God is good – can be transformative. Even in darkness, we can trust His goodness and believe He’s working for our good.

Sometimes, “more than we can handle” leads to unexpected blessings. Hardships can reveal hidden strength, resilience, and deeper faith. In surrendering, we truly experience God’s power and grace.

Our narrative about struggles matters. Instead of negativity and despair, focus on God’s goodness and trust His plan, even when it’s unclear. Acknowledging “I’m not feeling it today” is valid, but it doesn’t define our journey.

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us: “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD…” God’s plan often surpasses our understanding. Even when overwhelmed, we find solace knowing He’s working for our good, even in ways we don’t grasp. In surrender and trust, “I’m not feeling it today” shifts from despair to faith. We’re reminded that even when we’re not feeling it, God is.
