2023 US Flag at Half-Mast: Days of Remembrance

Throughout 2023, flags across the US were lowered to half-mast to honour fallen heroes, victims of tragedies, and influential figures. These periods of mourning often followed proclamations from Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox, echoing national directives.

In January 2023, flags were lowered following the tragic Monterey Park, California mass shooting. This act of solidarity allowed communities to grieve. Later, a similar tragedy in Nashville, Tennessee, prompted another lowering of flags in March.

May 2023 saw flags at half-mast for the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, honouring these brave individuals. Shortly after, flags remained lowered for the Allen, Texas shooting victims, extending the period of mourning.

September marked the solemn anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Flags were at half-mast on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s passing also prompted a nationwide lowering of flags.

October 2023 saw flags lowered in solidarity with Israel following a period of conflict and to honour victims of violence in Lewiston, Maine. December brought lowered flags for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and the passing of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

These instances of half-mast flags in 2023 served as visual reminders of loss and the importance of unity during grief. Each lowering represented a moment for communities to reflect and honour those lost or dedicated to service.
