What is Happening in Bangladesh Today?

Recent events in Bangladesh have sparked international concern over human rights violations and government crackdowns on protests. Initially triggered by the reinstatement of a quota system reserving government jobs for children of independence war veterans, demonstrations escalated quickly. Police responded with excessive force, leading to numerous deaths and injuries.

The death of Abu Sayed, a student protester, became a symbol of the violence. He was shot at close range by police using birdshot, ammunition designed for hunting and considered unlawful for use in protest control. Sayed posed no apparent threat to the officers.

The protests continued, and the death toll rose dramatically. Reports indicate hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. Journalists and bystanders were also targeted in the crackdown. The government imposed a communication blackout, shutting down the internet and restricting access to information.

Bangladesh deployed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and the Army, imposing a “shoot at sight” curfew. When internet restrictions were partially lifted, reports emerged of mass arrests and thousands of protesters facing charges.

The initial protests focused on the job quota system, which was seen as favoring supporters of the ruling party. Although the Supreme Court reduced the quota, demonstrations persist, demanding justice for those killed, injured, and arrested.

Authorities employed various tactics to suppress the protests, including the unlawful use of lethal and less-lethal weapons. Amnesty International verified the use of shotguns loaded with birdshot, grenade launchers, and assault rifles against protesters.

Arbitrary arrests and detentions are widespread, targeting protesters, activists, and journalists. Mass arrests of students and opposition activists continue, further restricting freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The internet shutdown significantly hampered access to information and fueled instability.

Amnesty International has documented numerous human rights violations, including unlawful use of force, denial of medical assistance, and mass arrests. They are calling for accountability and an end to the repressive measures. The organization’s investigations continue, focusing on the crimes committed during and after the protests. Global solidarity is crucial to support protesters and demand justice for the victims.
